It’s far too easy for me to forget.

This morning I woke up and drove Sweetheart to school, and came home to Buddy (who calls me “Dayo-dayo”, since he can’t rock L’s yet), changed his butt, and checked on Kid, who needed a bottle. After taking care of breakfast, I set to work on an article I’m working on for the next NAC newsletter. Honey was still in bed – we had a crazy weekend of shows, seminars, family gatherings, and of course work.

My blogging partners today – I got one on each knee

Over the last two days especially, I think, it’s become painfully aware of how good I really have it. I play music for a living. My Nikki does the web design, branding management, social media strategies for most-if-not-all of the projects I’m involved in from home. We have so much time to spend with the kids and with each other, that it can fade into the background. Do we work every day? Oh yeah, definitely, but how much of that work would be possible without each other’s loving support? None.

Nikki has a knack for seeing things that I don’t, and that’s usually a business thing, but right now I’m most focused on her ability to find the poetry in her own day-to-day life. My own tendency has been to look for it in others, write a song about it, maybe – then call it a day. Maybe my approach is a repurpose of the old “grass is always greener” adage. But that’s where I start to fail though.

So much of what I do is intended to create a future for myself and my family by enhancing the present of others. In the process (I’ll be gentle with myself) – there’s a possibility that I disengage with the present, losing focus on amazing things that are right in front of me – like an easy morning with the kids while I write. Like remembering to play guitar because it’s fun, not because it’s my job… Like remembering that my work is supposed to be fun for those closest to me – instead of being only for the strangers I sing and dance for at my gigs.

Dear reader, thanks for indulging this morning’s introspection, and maybe you’ve just watched me grow a little…

Last Week’s YOTI show was awesome – Now Come out tonight, too!

We had a GREAT show last week with Something Beautiful, Scars of Armageddon and Crusader! Everybody’s got records out, so look em up on iTunes or wherever you buy your music. Matt and Michelle from Skull Fogger made appearances onstage with Something Beautiful and Scars of Armageddon – which was RAD, as well as with Something Beautiful on a very killer version of Daughter of God, which we got on video and I’m going to cut it together and have for you real soon –

TOO many bands and friends came out to support to mention them all, but I’ll take a moment to try – The Alder Kings were there, Jim from Jungle Rot, of course. It was Niki Hush’s birthday (from Skull Fogger) the night before, so they came with CAKE, which was rad – our badass super-fan Chris Stehman was there – and Rich from 5 Minus X was singing along and getting some great video – of course you can pick up our version of Oh Danny Boy on iTunes 😉 – Nikki (my awesome girlfriend) from Nerdy Girl Designs and NAC was hanging out…

Man, there was a LOT of people there, and I’m just trying to touch base before I load out for tonight’s show – so I’ll have to stop here for now, but I hope like all get out that you click through the links above and pass out some LIKES! In the meantime, it’s time to ROCK OUT! See you tonight everybody!

VIDEO: His Eye in on the Sparrow, and What Happens When Nobody Shows Up

I was hanging out at a gig, the weather was pretty bad so everyone who was coming was late, and I personally am of the mind that

Shows can run late – but not because of me if I can help it

So I used my early time slot to play for anyone around, or just for myself, maybe shoot some video. I found some Legos and made myself a tripod, and started playing. This was one of those nights where I had a couple sets, so hanging out and waiting for the next set time wasn’t a big deal – also, it gave me time to meet some new people and gather some business cards, and shoot some video with them too. I try to utilize whatever time I have to have fun if I can’t be productive.

Have a good time all the time, you guys.

Win Justice Radio Interview

Last Friday I did a thirty minute spot on the Win Justice Radio Show with hosts Gwendolyn Chubb and Mik Gerhardt. It broadcasts at que4radio.org and Chicago’s AM 1710. Gotta tell you, I had a great time. This entire sentence is a link to download an mp3 of my segment – as well as this image:

The Revolution and Beer show as well as the Win Justice show spun the new Oh Danny Boy track throughout the weekend – which was just excellent of them – I’ll of course be keeping in touch with everybody over there and I look forward to being a guest at Revolution and Beer!

Nikki, NAC, Tin Lolita, 5 Minus X, Something Beautiful, Saucy Boss, and umm… LOTS of nouns in my life came up – so give it a listen, and I’ll be back real soon.

Another song each month? Yeah, why not? How about a full-length and an EP?

Not sure if anybody’s noticed yet, but I’m publishing a new song every month – Mostly quick n dirty sessions, or a demo, but by and large songs that are good, and deserve publishing, if not a ton of time investment. There’s a thing they say in academia –

Publish or perish

That’s been nibbling at me for a year or so, and it gives me pause – I got the band(s), I’ve got plenty of material, but the lack of a recording schedule, long and short-term goals that are SMART or nameable really can leave a body bewildered, confused and moving about as fast as a turtle racing through peanut butter.

That’s what smart goals are, if you were wondering.

ANYHOW – This year I’m on schedule to not only release a new song (or new arrangement of an old song) every month – that’s a minimum, by the way. I’m also upping my video releases. ALSO, I’m on track to have a summer EP out with Tin Lolita, AND a FULL LENGTH LP in the fall. Much of my strategy here will be duplicated and therefore DOUBLED with Something Beautiful – How the hell am I going to do this?

optimism

Not really, but there’s a lot of planning, emails, phone calls, coffee, asking Nikki tons of questions, cigarettes and get-the-hell-up-and-do-something involved. I’ll get more details up here as I get them, but for now here’s the year so far – make sure you haven’t missed anything!

January – We Shall Overcome with Eric McGhee was a video and free mp3 download,

February – Lonely for You, from the Common Courtesy video was dropped onto iTunes and Amazon and all that jazz

March – Richard from 5 Minus X and I did a punk rock Oh Danny Boy, which is available now!

More is on the way – Eric from Saucy Boss is coming in for a session this month, and I just got off the horn with Matt from Skull Fogger to plan something for this year.

Artist Spotlight interview for NAC

I was the featured artist in NAC’s newsletter this month – here’s some of it, click the link at the bottom to read it in full, and subscribe there to get their monthly news about arts events that are happening!

Exclusive interview with Dale Tippett Jr.

“It’s shaping up to be an extremely exciting year,” Dale says when asked about his plans for his solo project, Dale Tippett Jr featuring Tin Lolita. “We’re on track to have a new song released every month this year, an EP for the summer and a full-length release in the fall.” Dale’s music is best described as “sultry blues rock, peppered with a little jazz influence.” Dale and Tin Lolita (Ezra Lange, bass, and Auggie Jaramillo, drums,) will be making appearances at several festivals and neighborhood events in Chicago this year.

Putting out a new song every month seems like it would be challenging.  How has the experience been so far?

Honestly, not that bad. I laid out a large-scale plan, but there’s still room for improvising. In January, for example, I released a video and free mp3 download of “We Shall Overcome” with my friend Eric McGhee. I knew the plan, and that the song would happen – but I didn’t know exactly what the execution would look like until the day of the session. Eric didn’t even know exactly what was going on until I was setting up the camera! The music and video for the February release, Lonely for You, had been done for a couple years already, so I didn’t sweat much over that.

So, can you give us a sneak peek of what you’re working on for March?

I just recorded a pop-punk version of ‘Oh Danny Boy’ with Rich Aszling from 5 minus X. It was a fun session.  It should be out before St Patrick’s Day.
